What’s the question you dread being asked?

So... You decided to go and do some networking or attend a business event, heck this can even happen at a party or social event?

Inevitably, unless you confidently walk in and take charge of every conversation, you will be asked the default stock question, everyone asks...

"So, tell me, what do you do?"

When I started out, I didn't really know how to answer, other than the obvious "I'm an accountant..."

...followed usually by tumbleweed and especially the ladies, would suddenly spot someone else they need to speaking to!

But after a while, I began to realise that people have a preconception of what that means, and in some cases the conversation that followed wasn't very comfortable as they begin to berate the profession because of some bad experience they've had in the past and it can just make the whole experience suck.

However, I learnt that if you take some time out to learn some default statements and phrases, and yes, why not practice them, just like learning lines for a play...

Then experiment and play with different examples until you become really comfortable.

What will follow is that the person you are speaking to, if they are an ideal prospect will quickly see you are confident and authoritative, and that's a great place to start your long term working relationship together, right?
