Just at home reflecting…
...when the sky is blue the sun is shining and just thinking I could be stuck in traffic, commuting, stuck in traffic we live in the Dorset countryside in our little bit of peace and tranquillity.
But, it wasn’t always like this…
Let me take you back to the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
I was 20, working in a firm of accountants and saw an advert in a newspaper to build my own house. A first time buyer, what did I know about the building industry?
Well, I went and made some enquiries and as I left a chap in a suit put his arm in front of me and my life changed right there and then…
He said “if you work hard, put some time and effort in for the next 18 to 24 months, the deposit for the house would be your labour…”
So I joined a self build scheme, with fourteen tradesmen and four non-trades, which I was one of the four, and we built in evenings and weekends 18 luxury homes and I thought at 21 years old, I had made it!
What I didn’t understand was the economic crisis of Black Wednesday and the impact of one Norman Lamont, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, who was forced to put up interest rates…
What followed was an incredibly shit time in my life, but looking back on it, was the foundation of many years of real hands on experience that I have developed to help clients we work with now.
High interest rates, negative equity, unemployed, no money and bailiffs on the door and yet it still ended up worse, if you want to know what a shit birthday present is, then watch the film!
It’s when I started in business, 1 client became 2 and so forth, we were focused on making money because we had to and it came at a huge cost.
Along the way it taught me a lot about business and life, so we do understand what it's like to have struggles, challenges, but it's how you think about yourself and how you overcome the challenges and what you do afterwards that is important.
Sometimes we hear business owners talking negatively, to themselves and their family and all we are aiming to do is to help them change that thinking and create an action plan so they can start to see some positive results.
